In recent times, the competition has changed its rules to stay relevant with the times – by allowing married women to enter and mothers, for example.
Critics however, have argued that the competition promotes outdated ideas of femininity and unachievable beauty standards.
The competition celebrates diversity and empowerment but not all are pleased with this year’s winner.
Social media has been buzzing with conflicting opinions, many of whom believe that Miss Thailand’s Suchata Chuangsri was robbed of the crown.
Chuangsri is fluent in Thai, English and Chinese and studies international relations at Thammasat University.
When asked about the qualities of a successful leader, the 21-year-old said: “Empathy, because no matter how good you are, no matter what kind of education you have, in the end, you need empathy to care about your people.”
One person wrote on social media; “I thought it was an unfair and racist decision.” while another said; They need to get it together as there’s no diversity and it’s becoming evident.”
A third agreed; “True beauty lies in our stories, in what makes us different, not in an idealized appearance,” while another, penned; : “Of course, they gave a white girl Miss Universe.”
