Mars Family – The Global Candy Empire Thriving for Over a Century

When discussing the world’s most wealthy and influential families, the Mars family undoubtedly stands out. According to Forbes, this family commands a net worth of $117 billion, making them the second-richest family in the United States.

The Mars family owns Mars Inc., one of the largest candy manufacturers in the world, famous for iconic products like Snickers, Mars Bars, Milky Way, Twix, and M&M’s. Despite their massive success, the family is known for its secretive lifestyle, rarely appearing in the media or discussing their enormous fortune.

From Milky Way to a Global Empire

Mars Inc. was founded in 1911 by Franklin Clarence Mars. In 1923, Franklin introduced Milky Way, based on an idea from his son, Forrest Mars Sr.. The candy bar quickly became one of the best-selling products worldwide.

After Franklin’s passing in 1934, his son Forrest Mars Sr. took over and expanded the company globally, establishing factories in countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. Forrest also introduced several legendary products, including:

  • Milky Way (1924)
  • Mars Bar (1932)
  • M&M’s (1941)

In addition to candy, Forrest ventured into pet care, acquiring Chappell Brothers, Ltd., a producer of canned dog food. This move laid the foundation for Mars’ successful pet food division, which continues to grow today.

Family Transition and Business Philosophy

In 1973, Forrest Sr. handed the company to his three children: Forrest Jr., John, and Jacqueline Mars. Despite their billionaire status, the siblings were raised under strict discipline, working on farms and performing household chores to earn pocket money.

Among the three, Jacqueline Mars is the most visible member of the family. Her net worth is estimated at over $38 billion, and she owns multiple properties, including a $2 million mansion in New Jersey. However, she remains largely private about her personal life.

Currently, the leadership of Mars Inc. is gradually transitioning to the fourth and fifth generations of the family. Despite its global scale, the company adheres to its identity as a family-owned business and steadfastly refuses to go public.

A Legacy of Privacy and Success

The Mars family is famously private, keeping their wealth and personal lives shrouded in secrecy. Even their corporate headquarters is a modest two-story building in London, reflecting their understated approach.

This focus on privacy and tight control has allowed the Mars family to maintain their business empire for over a century, standing as a testament to their enduring success and resilience.
