Fans of the musical Wicked have taken to social media, reacting to unverified claims regarding the pay differences between stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo for their roles in the upcoming film adaptation.

Ariana Grande is set to portray Glinda, while Cynthia Erivo will play Elphaba in the movie. In Wicked, a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the story focuses on Elphaba’s transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West, suggesting she might have the more central role. Given their equally significant roles, some expected that both actresses would receive similar compensation.

Despite this, rumors started circulating on TikTok, alleging that Grande was paid ‘$14 million more’ than Erivo for their roles in Wicked.

One TikTok video claimed Erivo received $1 million for her part, whereas Grande was allegedly paid $15 million.

Another TikToker commented: “NO because The pay gap between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo is INSANE. Ariana Grande paid 15 million, whilst Cynthia Erivo paid a measly one million for wicked, when in my opinion – both had identical roles. ICL Any OG Cynthia supporter/ follower would be appalled at this are you joking?”

However, Universal Studios has now responded to these claims.

A spokesperson for the film studio told The Hollywood Reporter: “Reports of pay disparity between Cynthia and Ariana are completely false and based on internet fodder.

“The women received equal pay for their work on Wicked.”

Several other sources, reportedly close to the situation, have also confirmed the spokesperson’s statement.

A TikTok user reflected: “Whoever started that rumor probably did it for clicks, likes and views. […] I’m not going to lie to you guys, the reason why the rumor spread so much was because it was very believable.”

The TikToker pointed to another movie where a Black actress was reportedly paid less than her white colleagues, adding: “So while the directors of Wicked did what needed to be done there are a lot who would not do the same. So don’t spread lies, but don’t forget this is America.”

Since its premiere in the US and UK on 22 November, Wicked has been a massive box office success, earning $164.2 million globally during its opening weekend.
