Raygun Announces Retirement From Breakdancing After Months Of Bullying
The Australian breakdancer known as “Raygun” has found herself in the global spotlight following her memorable Olympic performance this summer—and has now largely decided to step away from competitive breakdancing due to the reaction she received.
The addition of breaking intrigued many viewers, as the sport, originating in New York’s hip-hop scene in the 1980s, is still considered unconventional by Olympic standards.
The competition featured 32 dancers in total, with 16 men (“b-boys”) and 16 women (“b-girls”). While Japan’s Ami Yuasa, known as Ami, took home the gold in the women’s category, she was notably overshadowed by Australia’s Rachael Gunn, a.k.a. “Raygun.” Though Raygun failed to score a single point in her three round-robin rounds—where her unconventional routines included crawling and kangaroo-like hops—she quickly went viral, capturing attention across social media.
However, Raygun has now announced that she is stepping away from high-level competitions, citing the intense criticism as a major factor in her decision. In a recent interview with 2DayFM, she explained, “I’m not going to compete anymore, no. I was going to keep competing, for sure, but that seems really difficult for me to do now to approach a battle. I mean I still dance, and I still break. But, you know, that’s like in my living room with my partner. It’s been really upsetting. I just didn’t have any control over how people saw me or who I was.”
