I DIDN’T GET WHY MY BEST STUDENT REFUSED TO PERFORM IN THE SCHOOL CONCERT — UNTIL I SAW WHO HIS DAD WAS I'm a school music teacher, and when I first met Jay, I'd only been on the job a week. Teaching kids was way tougher than expected, and I wondered if I'd made a mistake taking this role. Then Jay sat down at the piano, and the symphony he played… it was something else. I'd never heard a kid play like that, especially with so little practice. I was completely floored. How could he have that much talent without proper training? This boy was a natural. When I offered him private lessons, though, he hesitated and eventually said no. I'd noticed he didn't eat lunch with the other kids and always kept to himself, so I started to piece things together... I decided I'd teach him anyway at no charge. Over the next few weeks, we played together almost daily. Jay made incredible progress—he was mastering complex pieces faster than I'd ever seen anyone do. I knew he was ready to perform, and he agreed to a debut performance. But, on the day of the performance, he disappeared. I searched everywhere and finally found him hiding backstage, looking terrified. He whispered, "I have to go on… before my father sees me!" I was confused. Why would his father stop him from playing? But then Jay's eyes widened as he looked over my shoulder. I turned, and suddenly, it all made sense. I knew his father. All too well.👇
