‘Real Housewives’ star Matthew Byars dies at 37 reportedly by suicide
At the age of 37, Byars’ life came to a tragic end due to suicide, confirmed by Maryland’s Chief Office of Medical Examiner with the cause being multiple blunt force injuries.
Matthew Byars first entered the public eye through The Real Housewives of Potomac, introduced during the show’s third season by star Karen Huger. Byars quickly became a memorable part of the series, notably during Huger’s infamous “press conference” aimed at addressing rumors about her financial situation.
The news of his death has deeply affected those who knew him, including Melissa Gorga of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, who expressed her grief and shock on Instagram.
“Matt – Why didn’t you tell me Matt?” Gorga wrote, lamenting the loss of a friend known for his infectious personality and humor. “I’m heartbroken. Your personality was infectious. Your jokes – you always had them. You should have done stand-up – I know it was your dream.”
Gorga also reflected on Byars’ challenges and her wish that she could have done more to help him. “I know life was tough – I know – Thank you for bringing me my very 1st performance of ‘ON DISPLAY’ – you and I – WE ARE LOYAL. They don’t make them like us. I wish I could have saved you. Thank you for the memories. Go fly – Go make them laugh.”
Karen Huger, who had a close and enduring friendship with Byars since he was a teenager, reminisced about their relationship in a past interview with The Daily Dish.

“I’ve known Matt since he was about 17, 18 years old. I encourage Matt when life is difficult,” Huger said, noting how many in Potomac referred to her as ‘Mama Karen’ due to her nurturing approach. She highlighted how Byars was like family to her, attending her mother’s funeral and maintaining a strong friendship even as she rose to fame.
His memory will live on through the moments he shared on screen and the personal impacts he had on those around him.
