The actor’s Irish surname has apparently left people confused

The Irish actor, 32, has shot to fame in the past couple of years thanks to his role opposite Jacob Elordi in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn last year.

Keoghan has also appeared in projects such as The Banshees of InisherinDunkirk and HBO series Chernobyl over the years.

With all this newfound attention questions about how to pronounce the actor’s surname have inevitably come up, with every other person seemingly having a different way of saying Keoghan.

How to pronounce Barry Keoghan

So how do you say the name Keoghan? KO-Gan, Kyown or something else entirely?

Well thankfully we don’t have to guess any longer, as the actor himself has made sure to clear things up on the matter.

Check out Keoghan saying his name in an interview with Esquire in 2023 below:

Around five seconds into the video the actor introduces himself, pronouncing his name as ‘Barry Keoh-Gan’.

That’s right, Keoh-Gan. Let’s all it once more for luck, Keoh-Gan.

Now you’d think Barry himself pronouncing his name would be enough to clear things up for good, however, don’t get your hopes up too soon as it seems the actor isn’t too sure himself.

During an appearance at Dublin Comic Con back in 2022, Geek Ireland put the question to the actor and he didn’t exactly fill us all with hope.

“Keo-Gan. You pronounce the G. Or at least I do,” he said. “Maybe I’ve just been pronouncing it wrong all these years but yeah, the g sound is in there.”

The actor then joked that having a ‘difficult to pronounce name’ can be useful in the industry.

“But I find that if you have a difficult to pronounce name, you’re more likely to go far especially in the US,” he added. “Like Saoirse Ronan and all the talk of how to pronounce her name; so maybe it’s a benefit having a peculiar name.”

Keoghan isn’t the only actor who has had to clarify how to pronounce their name in recent years, with James Bond star Daniel Craig recently correcting TV host Stephen Colbert after he butchered the actor’s surname.

Colbert had previously been calling the Knives Out actor ‘Daniel Creg’ to which the 56-year-old replied by informing him it was ‘Cray-g’
