Authorities are currently probing the suspected shooter’s intentions. This investigation follows revelations that she allegedly orchestrated the attack at her school.

A teenage student carried out a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School (ALCS) on December 16, 2024, in Madison, Wisconsin. She killed a teacher and a fellow student and left at least six others injured.

The shooting reportedly took place during a study hall with students from multiple grades. Alarms soon sounded throughout the building. “Everybody started freaking out,” revealed sixth-grader Breken Ives, who was shocked by the intercom announcement. “Lockdown. This is not a drill.”

Breken’s teacher acted swiftly, instructing the students to hide in a corner, out of view from the door. While sheltering, he heard gunshots and screams echoing from the hallway.

As chaos continued, younger children also faced terrifying moments. Eight-year-old Nora Gottschalk, a second grader, was in the hallway preparing for lunch when the shooting erupted.

She witnessed a familiar teacher who had been injured and recounted during an interview, “She was screaming, ‘Ah, my leg, help, help!’ I was really scared, and I was really sad.”

The fear and confusion extended throughout the school. Sixth-grader Adler Jean-Charles was in his English class when the lockdown began. He recalled hearing two gunshots, followed by the sounds of his classmates crying as they waited for police to arrive and escort them to safety.

Though scared and bewildered by what was happening, Adler found comfort later when the students were taken to the hospital to meet their families. Given a teddy bear during the reunion, he finally felt safe when he saw his mother.

Adler’s mother, Mireille Jean-Charles, was overwhelmed with emotion as she reunited with her children. Her two other sons also attend the Christian school, and when they were finally together, they cried and prayed as a family.

The weight of the experience was evident. When asked if she was all right, she shook her head and broke down in tears. The concerned parent described the anguish of receiving the call about the lockdown and not knowing her children’s whereabouts.

Though relieved that her children were safe, she admitted that the trauma was profound, “[…] I’m sure they lost friends and teachers, which is not OK. And I don’t think they’ll be OK for a long time.”

The tragedy deeply affected the community, including Bethany Highman, a former ALCS student whose daughter currently attends the school. Though her daughter was unharmed, Highman anxiously waited to be reunited, uncertain of her child’s whereabouts.

While grappling with the reality of the day, she reflected on her morning prayers for her children’s safety, acknowledging the difficult world they live in. Despite everything, she remained steadfast in her faith, grateful that her family was safe.

The sense of fear and uncertainty gripped not only the families but the entire school community. In response to the incident, ALCS turned to its Facebook page for support, posting, “Prayers Requested! Today, we had an active shooter incident at ALCS. We are in the midst of following up. We will share information as we are able.”

As the investigation unfolded, Madison police confirmed the shooter was 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, who went by Samantha. Police Chief Shon Barnes revealed during a press conference that she was a student at ALCS.

Rupnow was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital, with evidence indicating she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In the aftermath, the investigation turned to the weapon used in the attack. According to two law enforcement officials, the shooter used a 9-millimeter pistol.

Barnes confirmed that a handgun was recovered at the scene, though the origin of the weapon was still unclear. According to him, federal investigators will assist in determining where and when the firearm was purchased.

As the investigation progressed, Barnes indicated that the motive behind the attack likely involved multiple factors. Authorities are interviewing students to determine if bullying played a role. Barnes noted, “Everyone was targeted in this incident and everyone was put in equal danger.”

The official also emphasized the need for responsible social media use when discussing the suspect. Addressing questions about Rupnow’s gender identity, he said it was irrelevant to the incident.

Barnes urged people to set aside personal biases and avoid spreading misinformation online, stating that such details were of no consequence so soon after a mass shooting.

“Despite this tragedy, they still lost a child. They still lost a member of their family,” Barnes explained, acknowledging the parents likely have more questions than anyone else. Investigators have spoken with Rupnow’s father, while her mother, who has been out of town, has yet to be questioned.

Police discovered that Rupnow had meticulously planned the attack after finding a manifesto detailing her intentions during a search of her home.

Footage from the scene showed a house decorated with Christmas lights, surrounded by police tape, with the front door removed and windows damaged. Neighbors reported that officers arrived shortly after the shooting and remained on-site until nightfall.

According to witnesses, police deployed stun grenades during the search, creating bright flashes and loud bangs. Steve Porter, a neighbor, described the scene, noting the absence of residents and detectives working to process evidence inside the home.

For many, ALCS served as a refuge for students who had faced challenges elsewhere. With around 400 students from kindergarten through 12th grade, the private school was known for swiftly addressing bullying and fostering a supportive environment.

Rebekah Smith, whose daughter was in a nearby classroom during the shooting, mentioned that Rupnow appeared to be a new student, possibly seeking a fresh start. She expressed sympathy for parents who hope such a change will help their child, saying she couldn’t imagine what they must be feeling.

The tragic events at ALCS have left a community grappling with grief, unanswered questions, and the challenge of healing. As families, students, and staff process the aftermath, the hope for compassion, understanding, and lasting support remains essential.
